More Than Matcha At Nana’s Green Tea

Kinoko Hamburg Steak With Millet Rice After walking and feeling absolutely miserable walking in our hot and humid weather, I hungrily settlled at Nana’s Green Tea at Plaza Singapura for dinner. I had always associated Nana’s with dessert so this time round, I decided to try out their mains. I ordered their Kinoko Hamburg Steak With Millet Rice (S$14.90++). It’s essentially a beef burger patty with mushrooms and a cream sauce. I was pleasantly surprised that when the dish came, it looked almost exactly like the photo in the menu! It comes with a bowl of miso soup which was...

Manzoku Really Leaves You Satisfied!

My ex-colleague treated me to lunch as she had missed my farewell lunches back in August. She brought me to this Japanese restaurant named Manzoku, located at Purvis Street. I never knew about this Japanese place as our usual haunt was another Japanese place further up the street! Manzoku means ‘satisfied’ in Japanese and with a name like that, they aim to please all their customers so that they leave feeling absolutely satiated. Mazoku happens to be the sister restaurant of Chikuwa Tei and both belong to the Yoi Group. Even before I ordered the food, I seriously had high...

Indian Coconut Butter Chicken with Savoy Coconut Rice

Was treated to this dish during Vita Coco’s Singapore launch of their coconut oil. This is the Coconut Butter Chicken with Savoy Coconut Rice and it uses both coconut oil and coconut water in the recipe! We had a short cooking demonstration by the chef at The Legends, Hotel Fort Canning, on how this dish was prepared but of course, you guys need the actual recipe! The recipe is courtesy of Hotel Fort Canning and you can download it here.

Pork Chops With Caramelised Onions and Fig

This is my second attempt at a pork chop. I seldom eat or cook pork chop because it’s really difficult to cook it such that it’s pink in the middle but yet cooked. I find it much easier to stew or cook sliced pork because when pork is cooked, there’s a high chance of it being tough. However, after tasting my aunt’s pork chops, I really wanted to recreate it with my own twist. I wouldn’t call this attempt a success but I really liked the seasoning I used as well as the onion fig sauce. Pork Chop seasoning (for...

Tai Parfait Is A Deceptively Sinful Treat

I was walking around Bugis Junction and I spied my dessert eye on this corner shop at the basement level where they have 2 things that I like – ice cream and tai ‘cake’! Tai cake is a sweet waffle/cake that is normally shaped like a fish and traditionally filled with red bean paste. However, modern versions include chocolate, custard, cream cheese and other yummy concoctions. This Tai-Parfait decided to change the shape of the fish’s mouth to be wide and topped it with ice cream/cream/fruit to level-up the decadence. So, I chose the more ‘original’ Japanese flavour of Matcha...

Tiramisu Mille Feuille Birthday Cake

Check out the epic Tiramisu Mille Feuille that my aunt made for me as my birthday cake! I had requested this about a month back and since my aunt is now in Singapore, she made this for my birthday. My first homemade birthday cake!! 😀 As you can see, I was thrilled to have it and funnily enough, I did help out in making this! I was the one who helped with the crepes and I shaved the dark chocolate on the top. My aunt used the recipe for this as per Tasting Table. Making the cake isn’t very difficult....

Fried Tofu Topped with Minced Pork and Preserved Vegetables In Special Sauce

Sorry that this photo wasn’t that appetising but trust me when I say that the taste of the food was quite good. This was an experiment because I needed another dish to complete the meal for the 4 of us but we already had quite substantial dishes so this one was just something ‘light’. Into the fridge I explored and came out with minced pork, a little bit of preserved vegetables (菜心) and half a piece of hard tofu, also known as taukwa.Ingredients:1 or half a piece of taukwa, sliced into smaller pieces of about 2-3 cm wide.50g minced pork5-6...

Slow Roasted Pork Belly

I was really inspired by this video of Gordon Ramsay’s Slow Roasted Pork Belly that I even asked my mum to buy pork belly when she went to the market last weekend. A few differences from what I cooked and what Ramsay’s recipe required:– instead of fennel, I used pearl onion and ginger– instead of cardamon, I used all spice powder and thyme– instead of white wine, I used beer Because I used a much smaller piece of pork belly, I reduced the cooking time to 1 hour. Perhaps that was a big mistake. The skin was not as crispy...

Smoked Salmon Wrap

With yoga at 1.30pm and waking up at 10am, I needed a substantial brekkie without making me feel like I’m gonna puke. So, I decided to make a simple and quick Smoked Salmon Wrap! For the base, I used the leftover guacamole and then layered some rocket leaves before adding my salmon, which was smoked with Manuka! As I’m trying to eat clean, I didn’t put any mayo or cream cheese in this wrap. Instead, I added balsamic vinegar but since it’s so liquid, it slid off the salmon and you cannot see it in this photo. Dead easy, isn’t...

Beef Wrap With Caramelised Onions

I’ve been down with a stomach flu for the past 1 week and so, I wanted something that was a little light, fuss free and easy to prepare. Also, I had an over-ripened avocado. So, I turned the avocado into a very simple guacamole, which provided the creamy base and ‘sauce’ for my wrap. The recipe below makes 2 wraps. You’ll need:1 avocado1 tsp lime juice or vinegarrocket leaves30g sliced beef (I used karubi chips)1 small onion, sliced1 tsp sugarsalt & pepper to taste For the Guacamole: Mash up the avocado Add in the lime juice/vinegar and continue to mash...
