Kale Salad with Spicy Peanut Dressing

My aunt doesn’t like kale and she doesn’t know what to do with it. Unfortunately, she keeps getting a bunch of it every week in the organic box of vegetables. So I come in a helped to demolish some of her kale in a humongous salad with spicy peanut sauce. Spontaneous Watermelon ‘Sangria’

We opened a bottle of wine for dinner tonight and had watermelon after our meal. There was some wine left as well as some watermelon. What do I suggest? Making a sangria of sorts but it’s really just white wine with watermelon cubes. Would’ve tasted better with some orange juice and mint. That’ll really be the taste of summer. Have you made up such spontaneous drinks before?

Spaghetti with Homemade Pesto

Went basil picking with my aunt last Saturday and the weather was so good that I managed to get a tan while picking! Haha. I really enjoy picking herbs and fruit. There’s something quite peaceful, calming and satisfying about picking your own food. The smell from the picked basil was amazing! It permeated the whole kitchen and it was lovely as it is a natural mosquito repellent. Anyway, we picked 2 bags full so for 1 of the bags, my aunt made pesto sauce! It’s so simple that anyone could do it. All she did was blitz the washed basil...

Sinful Cheese Bread Sticks at Arbuckles

Was brought to this place named “Arbuckles” and it’s apparently one of the more famous food joints in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. My aunt had a craving for their cheese bread sticks and with the 3 of us, she ordered the large plate. The above is nothing but cheese and bread sticks. Loads and loads of melted mozzarella cheese. Served with marinara sauce but my cousin also asked for ranch. That’s all we had for lunch. Seriously! I understood why my aunt liked it after a couple of bites. The bread is more like pastry and was buttery and flaky. My...

Massive Slices and Interesting Flavoured Pizza at Polito’s

After the cheese factory, my cousin decided to bring me to Polito’s as it’s another famous food joint in Stevens Point. The decor of the place is quite old school and reminds me of a mix between a diner and a sports bar. There are several photos lining the wall and goodness knows what you’ve got to do to get your photo up there. The slices are massive and they’re proud of it. In fact, Polito’s tagline is “Home of the big slice”. They’ve got very interesting flavours too! Flavours that you’d never think would be on a pizza. On...

Squeaky Cheese and Caprese

Went to the cheese factory with my cousin and his girlfriend as Wisconsin is all about milk and cheese. Didn’t go for any tour of sorts but it was quite cool to see the factory and how cheese is made. The cheese from the factory is definitely a whole lot cheaper than buying from the supermarkets. Saw this HUGE wheel of cheese in the store and I found this mouse toy-thing on it super cute! When you’re in the cheese factory, you naturally have to buy cheese right? So check out my stash! The mascarpone will be made into tiramisu...

Homemade Kimchi

My aunt is recently mad about kimchi and like most housewives, she likes making it herself. So, when I was there, I was roped in to help her make it. Here’s what she used: 2 heads of Napa cabbage1 cup of kosher salt (do not use regular table salt as kosher/sea salt is less salty)1 bag of kimchi chilli powder2 carrots, shredded12 cloves of garlic, minced3 tsp sugar1/2 cup fish sauce  My task was to salt the cabbage after my aunt had halved them. As they were dry (please do not wash the cabbage), I had to ensure that the...

Sunday ‘Roast’ of Chicken Satay

As my cousin was going away to college, my aunt decided to cook as many of his favourite Asian foods and one of them was Satay. It’s essentially grilled skewered meat but what makes it special are 2 things – the seasoning of the meat and the accompanying peanut sauce! My aunt’s peanut sauce doesn’t look like the one you’d get in Singapore and taste-wise, it was slightly different mainly due to the fact that she can’t get all the same ingredients in Wisconsin. However, as long as there’s peanut butter in it, it’s pretty legit! My aunt, the satay...

Unadulterated Meat Affair At Shake Shack

Shake Shack started in New York but we were unable to eat there as the queues were so disgustingly long. So, when we spotted this Shake Shack in Chicago with a less insane line, we jumped on the chance to try the famous burgers and hot dog. A lot of New Yorkers claim that Shake Shack has “the best burgers” so let’s see how their burgers stand to the taste test! The loot Mind you, you will need to queue to order before you’re handed a buzzer and then wait about 15 more minutes before your food is ready for...
