Squeaky Cheese and Caprese

Went to the cheese factory with my cousin and his girlfriend as Wisconsin is all about milk and cheese. Didn’t go for any tour of sorts but it was quite cool to see the factory and how cheese is made. The cheese from the factory is definitely a whole lot cheaper than buying from the supermarkets. Saw this HUGE wheel of cheese in the store and I found this mouse toy-thing on it super cute! When you’re in the cheese factory, you naturally have to buy cheese right? So check out my stash! The mascarpone will be made into tiramisu...

Homemade Kimchi

My aunt is recently mad about kimchi and like most housewives, she likes making it herself. So, when I was there, I was roped in to help her make it. Here’s what she used: 2 heads of Napa cabbage1 cup of kosher salt (do not use regular table salt as kosher/sea salt is less salty)1 bag of kimchi chilli powder2 carrots, shredded12 cloves of garlic, minced3 tsp sugar1/2 cup fish sauce  My task was to salt the cabbage after my aunt had halved them. As they were dry (please do not wash the cabbage), I had to ensure that the...

Sunday ‘Roast’ of Chicken Satay

As my cousin was going away to college, my aunt decided to cook as many of his favourite Asian foods and one of them was Satay. It’s essentially grilled skewered meat but what makes it special are 2 things – the seasoning of the meat and the accompanying peanut sauce! My aunt’s peanut sauce doesn’t look like the one you’d get in Singapore and taste-wise, it was slightly different mainly due to the fact that she can’t get all the same ingredients in Wisconsin. However, as long as there’s peanut butter in it, it’s pretty legit! My aunt, the satay...

Unadulterated Meat Affair At Shake Shack

Shake Shack started in New York but we were unable to eat there as the queues were so disgustingly long. So, when we spotted this Shake Shack in Chicago with a less insane line, we jumped on the chance to try the famous burgers and hot dog. A lot of New Yorkers claim that Shake Shack has “the best burgers” so let’s see how their burgers stand to the taste test! The loot Mind you, you will need to queue to order before you’re handed a buzzer and then wait about 15 more minutes before your food is ready for...

Blue Moon – Delightful Artisanal Beer

In our awesome Chicago Airbnb apartment, we found lotsa beer left behind by the previous tenants. Couldn’t help but pick out these Blue Moon flavoured beers as I’m always keen to try new stuff, although I am not a fan of beer. On the left is Chai Spiced Ale while the right is the White Ipa. Let’s talk about the Chai Spiced Ale first. I must say that I was a little sceptical about its taste because to me, Chai is a spiced tea and I cannot imagine how it’ll go as a beer. Apparently, very well! I could taste...

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

When you’re in Chicago, it is a MUST to try their Deep Dish Pizza. Yes, it’s an excuse to eat loads of cheese and it’s more of a pie than a pizza. But look at that… Massive pizza slices Instead of going to the restaurant, we decided to stay in our awesome Airbnb apartment (it was really gorgeous) and ordered in from Giordano’s. If you choose to do the same, please note that the deep dish pizza will take an hour to be delivered as the whole thing takes a longer time to be baked. As it was our first...

Dessert Time At Momofuku Milk Bar

So, chef David Chang in NYC set up a chain of restaurants and cafes named Momofuku and since we drove to Brooklyn and Williamsburg, I decided to try out the famous Momofuku Milk Bar. As the name suggests, the menu of the store is all about milk and the sweet stuff related to it. They’re famous for the Cereal Milk flavoured ice cream and I decided to have the Milkshake version of it! So sinful, I know. By the way, all their ice creams are soft served. Besides the ice creams and shakes, they also have cookies and pies. Jo...

We Found White Castle!

We found White Castle! I’m not gonna tell you where because honestly, it’s not in the best neighbourhood in New York 😛 Liked how they tried to bring back some of the old feel of a diner into the place through these old photos. As you can see, the sliders are really dirt cheap. Even the meat ones are about the same price. Only a few cents different. The sliders aren’t big…cos they’re sliders. So you’ll probably need a couple at least to fill you up. Taste-wise, I think Harold and Kumar raised our expectations of these little things way...

Great Burger In NYC Without The Mad Queue

On our way back to our AirBnB apartment on the Upper East Side, I spotted this diner named ‘3 Guys’ and for some weird reason, I wanted to go there for dinner. Thankfully one of my friends went along with my idea and after parking our car, we walked over for dinner. The diner itself was quite homely and judging from the menu, ‘3 Guys’ is trying to set itself as an Italian restaurant rather than an American diner. Nevertheless, they do have some American staples such as burgers. Ironically, I have been in the US for 3 days and...

Fattening Ourselves Up At IHOP

On our ‘road trip’ to the outlet stores in New York, we spied our little yes on IHOP along the highway. Making a detour, we went on our way to brunch at IHOP to load ourselves with the well known pancakes/waffles/crepes. What horrified me at first was the amount of calories stated for EACH dish. If that’s not enough to turn you off, I have no idea what. For once, we were choosing our meal based on the calories instead of the prices! Calmed myself down with herbal chamomile tea…before being amazed again at the bottles of syrup available. The...
