Adorable Macarons!

Had dinner at Bugis+ and then the family decided to walk over to Bugis Junction because mum wanted to get a new phone. While shopping, I spotted these super adorable macarons that were going at a slight discount because it was already 9pm. Instead of the usual 5 for $10, I got them at 6 for $10. The baker herself was there and she’s pretty young, probably in her early 20s if not her very late teens. As you can see, the macarons were made to resemble these characters: alien, Rilakkuma, minion and Totoro. The minion and Totoro macarons had...

Dancing Crab Is Finger Licking Yummy!

Not sure what’s with the seafood binging when it comes to celebrating my parents’ birthdays but mum decided to treat Dad to a crab dinner at Dancing Crab. I had previously mentioned this place to them before and how I’ve read good reviews online so my mum has been ever curious. The decor of the place is very eclectic modern with a mish-mash of wharf related items but yet the furniture is irregular. I recognise a lot of them as furniture from its predecessor, MAD. Anyway, the whole concept of this restaurant is that you eat EVERYTHING with your hands....

Mixed Feelings About Wrap & Roll Vietnamese

That, my friends, is my Stir Fried Chicken Pho (S$12.50++) at Wrap & Roll, a Vietnamese restaurant located at Ion Orchard. The above photo was taken by my friend and that’s his Stir Fried Seafood Pho (S$12.50++). I guess…I should keep to being the one taking the photos! LOL. Anyway, both of us have very different views about our stir fried phos. He loved his while I was a bit disappointed. So…why did he love it? Flavourful gravy Different from the usual soup pho Had lots of strong tasting veg (coriander and spring onions) And why didn’t I love it?...

Chef’s Noodles Serves Up Oodles of Interesting

Went to HarbourFront on Sunday to pick my mum up after her trip to Batam and since it was already 7.45pm, we decided to have dinner there. Dad was intrigued by the menu of Chef’s Noodle – a Korean Japanese fusion restaurant where they specialised in (no brownie points for guessing) noodles. For starters, we ordered the Chives & Shrimps Fritter (S$6.90++) which was supposedly dusted with a bit of curry powder to add to the flavour: The fritters were huge and we had to break it into 2 in order to be able to shove them into our mouths....

Jumbo Still Tops Seafood But The Chilli Crabs Lack Fanfare

Went to Jumbo Seafood Restaurant at their flagship restaurant at East Coast Park to celebrate the parents’ birthday early (thanks to my bro who’ll be overseas for a month). The last time I ever ate at Jumbo was at their Riverside Walk branch about 5 years ago. I am thoroughly amused by their bibs and it’s great because we all know how messy Chilli Crabs can be. They provide gloves too but hey…we’re Singaporeans…where’s the fun in eating crabs without the sauce all over your fingers and licking it off? We ordered the Baby Squid which were fried and tossed...

Pan Seared Grouper Fillet With Cha Soba and Sauteed Spinach

Had a really bad stomach last night that resulted in cramps this morning (doc said that my bowels were still irritated) so it was home to rest and a light lunch to follow. So, I whipped up this super easy and healthy lunch for myself. Ingredients:1 fish fillet (you can use salmon/dory/snapper)1 serving of soba noodles (I used the one with tea…hence the name ‘cha’)3 pallets of frozen chopped spinach (or about 100g fresh baby spinach)2 tablespoon soba sauce1 clove of garlic, minced Method: Pat your thawed fish fillet very dry with a paper towel Boil some water and cook...

Good Food At Cafe Prices In A Kopitiam Near Alexandra Village

It seems like one of the new ‘hip’ places to go to for dinner is near my place and next to Alexandra Village. Located at Blk 119 Bukit Merah Lane 1, this coffee shop that used to be plagued with bad fengshui and rotating shop owners, has finally found a winning combination of stalls that serve typical cafe and restaurant food! The place has gotten sooo popular and crowded that it operates now more like a restaurant than a kopitiam. There’s no such thing as free seating. You have to wait in line near the sign that’s located at the...

Dumplings Cooked 2 Ways

As mentioned in my previous post with the recipe on Pork Dumplings, I finally cooked them in 2 ways – fried as pot stickers and boiled, served with a healthy cabbage soup. The top shows the pot sticker version while the bottom shows the boiled version. The parents preferred the fried ones while I enjoyed both. The boiled version is really easy. You just boil them until they float before serving it with soup. I recommend chicken soup or something really salty because some of the residual water from the boiled dumplings will dilute the soup a little. Now, onto...

Pork Dumplings (aka Pot Stickers/ Jiao zi)

My best friend made pork dumplings last week, posted it up onto Facebook and made me ‘itchy’ to try my hands at making them. So I did! They don’t look the prettiest and I have to say that the wrapping is really THE most difficult part of this whole dish and if you’re lazy, just wrap it the ravioli way. These are called pot stickers(锅贴)if you lightly fry them in a pan or jiaozi (饺子)if you boil them and serve them in soup. Anyway, onto the recipe. I followed my mum’s recipe so it’s not in metric units (hurrah for...

New Recipe Book Bought – Japanese Traditional Desserts!

I am quite looking forward to when I have the time to try out some of the recipes! 楽しみに #inchefmode A photo posted by melfann (@melfann) on Mar 7, 2015 at 5:52am PST Bought this the other day and I can’t wait to try some of the recipes! However, it is proving a little difficult to find some of the ingredients. Where the heck can I find kuzu powder? I find that name quite funny as well…since kuzu also sounds like the derogative Japanese term you use to call people ‘trash’. Anyway…looking forward to making some!
