Chui Huay Lim Cuisine – Delicious Singaporean Take on Traditional Teochew Cuisine

Chui Huay Lim Club is nestled in a corner along Keng Lee Road, near Newton, and the Club itself is more than 160 years old. The flagship restaurant is also called Chui Huay Lim and it literally translates as Forest of Drunken Flowers. Hmm…how poetic. The family and I decided to go there for dinner and taste test the food as we were thinking of having our family reunion dinner with my paternal side there next month. My bro and I were a bit surprised that the Chui Huay Lim restaurant is managed by the Jumbo group. Photo courtesy of...

Good Place For Date Night – Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House (The Heeren)

Located in a nondescript corner of the 3rd floor of Robinsons, The Heeren (btw, the new Robinsons at Heeren remind me of Selfridges in London…but that’s a separate topic), that’s only highlighted with this thin sign, the family and I went to Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House for a special post-Christmas dinner. This particular branch at Heeren is very small and it has a bar seating as well as about 6 four-seaters and 4 two-seaters. This means that in order to be assured of a table, please reserve in advance. The decor of this branch is a classy black...

Spaghetti with Salmon Belly, Tomatoes & Avocado

It’s a Saturday, it’s lunch time and I’m feeling too lazy to go downstairs to buy food back while also feeling guilty for skipping Pilates this morning. So what do I whip up for lunch? A healthy meal of Spaghetti with slices of salmon belly, diced tomatoes and an avocado. Yes, it’s an oily dish but it’s all essential fatty acids! It may seem a bit weird Ingredients:1 avocado, diced5 cherry tomatoes, halved OR 1/2 large tomato, diced5 slices of salmon belly OR smoked salmon/ salmon fillet1 clove garlic, mincedenough spaghetti for 1 personsalt & pepper to tasteoptional – slice...

Replacing Eggs In Baking

If you’re a lazy cook/baker like me, there will be times when you realise that you have missing ingredients just when you’ve taken out the flour, chocolate chips and what nots. Most likely, you’ll find out that you have run out of eggs. We tend to take it for granted that our egg tray is stocked…but don’t fret! You can replace them eggs with other things! Good tip for vegans too! I did replace eggs with banana when I made my Salted Caramel Banana Chia Seed Cupcakes simply because I ran out of eggs. Haha…now you know why. Photo credit:...

How to cook grains

As a Chinese, I do eat rice as my staple and I’ve also switched from white polished rice to brown rice. You’d think that rice is rice but different types of rice (and therefore, grains) require different amounts of water to cook. Instead of writing down everything, here’s a good infographic that I found off Pinterest to give you a quick guide on cooking grains.

I’m finally on Pinterest!

I’m finally on Pinterest and if you’d like a more organised ‘board’ of my posts on my nail art plus my recipes, do follow me there at http://www.pinterest.com/themelissafann/. Besides those 2 boards, do give me suggestions on what other boards I should put up as I’d love to hear from you guys. Big thanks in advance for the follow!

Bats Cake Pops for Halloween – Fail :(

Bought this on my birthday and was inspired to bake them for Halloween. I even planned a party at the bestie’s place just so that I could showcase my Bats Cake Pops! The instructions from the kit made it seem sooo simple… and initially, it was. I just had to mix the red velvet pre-mix with an egg and melted butter, give it a good whisking before baking it. “Cut the cooled cake into squares and crumble it. Mix it in a bowl with half of the frosting.” Yup…that part is simple too. “Roll the cake mixture into balls.” Uh…that’s...

October Food Haul

Went to Meidi-ya one day with the parents after having a Japanese curry dinner and these 2 bags of crisps caught my eye. Thank you UK for the interesting flavours! The large bag of Guinness chips (S$5.95) tasted like lightly salted potato chips with a very slight aftertaste of stout. I really don’t mind having my stout like this but I would’ve preferred a stronger taste. Dad loved it and gobbled the whole bag down. I grew up eating Marmite and Bovril where it was a MUST to add it into plain rice porridge. I like eating it with toast...

Simple Roast Chicken with Figs and Onions

Fresh figs are hard to come by in Singapore but when you do get them, they’re so lush that it seems a bit of a shame to just eat them plain. I bought a box of 4 figs and I had already done the “eat ’em raw and fresh” to 2 of them and I didn’t want to make jam (with only 2 figs?) so I decided to cook them! As it is my birthday, my mum happily bought a whole chicken leg for me to do whatever I wish with it for lunch (I was on leave). Thus, the...

Gourmet-like Burgers at Fat Boy’s – The Burger Bar

With a name like “Fat Boy’s”, you know that you need to keep your trip to this joint a secret from your cardiologist. Just as the name suggests, chuck out your diet and just enjoy a burger. If burger isn’t your thing, there are other ‘healthier’ options such as salads (expect the meat toppings) and some other mains such as salmon and chicken and waffles (was sold out when I went). I love the sense of humour that surrounds the whole place. The sentence above the exit reads, “If you don’t like our burgers, the clown is just around the...
