Sushi Express is no stranger to pop culture collaborations. Following its successful partnerships with Tom and Jerry and The Powerpuff Girls, the conveyor belt sushi chain has teamed up with Illumination’s upcoming animated film, Minions & Monsters, for a limited-time menu available from 11 June to 31 July 2026.

As a fan of the Minions , I have to admit I was curious. Character-themed food often scores highly on cuteness but can be a hit-or-miss when it comes to taste. So during our unhosted tasting, we tried all four limited-edition dishes to see whether they’re worth your money.

Here’s our honest take.

Chicken Hamburg Steak Sushi (S$3.50++)

This was probably the cutest dish of the lot. The chicken hamburg steak is topped with a little Minion face inspired by the film’s new character, James.

Unfortunately, this was also our biggest disappointment.

The chicken hamburg itself was fairly ordinary and lacked the juicy, savoury flavour we were expecting. The cheese element was barely noticeable, and the biggest issue was the eye decoration, which turned out to be made of hard sugar.

While it looked adorable, it wasn’t particularly pleasant to eat. My daughter ended up removing the eye and eating it separately.

Verdict: Instagram-worthy but underwhelming in flavour. We’d skip this on our next visit.

Rating: 2.5/5

Octopus Sushi with Thai Chilli Sauce (S$2.00++)

This was hands down our favourite dish.

The tender octopus paired surprisingly well with the sweet and slightly spicy Thai chilli sauce. It added a fresh zing that elevated what could have been a standard octopus sushi plate.

In fact, if we were dining there again, we’d happily order two plates of this.

Sometimes the simplest dishes end up being the best, and that’s exactly what happened here.

Verdict: The standout item from the entire collaboration.

Rating: 4.5/5

Wagyu Beef Sushi with Citrus Salsa (S$3.50++)

This one left us feeling rather conflicted.

The wagyu slices were extremely thin and had a fairly pronounced beefy flavour. While the citrus salsa and mango components were meant to brighten the dish, the combination didn’t quite come together for us.

It’s certainly interesting and worth trying once if you’re curious, but it wasn’t memorable enough for a repeat order.

Verdict: Novel, but not one we’d crave again.

Rating: 3/5

Minion Banana Swiss Roll (S$3.50++)

Dessert turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

The banana aroma was lovely and immediately reminded us of the Minions’ well-known love for bananas. The cake itself wasn’t overly sweet and had a nice flavour overall.

However, our slice seemed to have been left out for a while, as the top layer had become slightly dry. At S$3.50++ for a single slice, it’s also on the pricier side.

Still, if you’re a banana lover or dining with little ones, this is probably the dessert they’ll gravitate towards.

Verdict: Tasty but a little expensive for what you get.

Rating: 3.5/5

Don’t Forget the Minions & Monsters Merchandise

Beyond the themed dishes, Sushi Express is also rolling out a range of limited-edition Minions & Monsters merchandise that fans and collectors may want to check out.

With a minimum spend of S$30 at Sushi Express and Sushi Plus outlets (or S$12 at 争鲜gogo kiosks), diners can purchase exclusive collectibles, including:

  • Acrylic Keychain – S$2.90 for members, S$4.90 for non-members
  • Drink Tumbler – S$8.90 for members, S$10.90 for non-members
  • Phone Strap with Character Charm – S$5.90 for members, S$7.90 for non-members
  • Hand Towel (available in two designs) – S$4.90 for members, S$6.90 for non-members

The keychains and tumblers are available from 11 June, while the phone straps and hand towels join the collection from 25 June.

For families dining with little Minions fans, the merchandise arguably makes the collaboration feel more special than the food itself. The tumblers and phone straps are particularly cute and make for fun keepsakes after your meal.

If you’re planning a visit, it may be worth checking stock availability beforehand, as popular designs have a habit of disappearing quickly.

Final Verdict: Is the Minions & Monsters Menu Worth Trying?

The collaboration succeeds in bringing some fun and whimsy to Sushi Express, especially for families with young children and Minions fans.

Not every dish is a winner, but the Octopus Sushi with Thai Chilli Sauce is genuinely delicious and worth ordering even if there wasn’t a movie tie-in attached to it.

If we had to rank the menu, here’s our order:

  1. Octopus Sushi with Thai Chilli Sauce – 4.5/5
  2. Minion Banana Swiss Roll – 3.5/5
  3. Wagyu Beef Sushi with Citrus Salsa – 3/5
  4. Chicken Hamburg Steak Sushi – 2.5/5

Overall, the Minions & Monsters collaboration is more about the experience than culinary innovation. Between the playful menu items, themed outlet decorations and collectible merchandise, it’s an enjoyable outing for families with young children and die-hard Minions fans. And if you’re wondering what we’d return for, it’s definitely another plate (or two) of that octopus sushi.
