Mother’s Day cakes are often chosen based on appearance alone, but flavour is what people remember long after the celebration ends. This year, The Pine Garden introduced three new cakes alongside several traditional Teochew-style treats, and we had the opportunity to try them at home across three generations.

Each cake offered a very different flavour profile — from tea-inspired elegance to wine-infused richness and nostalgic local dessert reinterpretations. One of them quickly became the clear favourite across the table.

Here’s how they compared.

Matcha Fog Cake Review: Light, Fragrant and Tea-Lover Friendly

Inspired by the familiar pairing of Earl Grey and matcha, the Matcha Fog Cake brings together floral tea sponge with honey Oolong fresh cream and earthy matcha layers.

The texture is noticeably light and smooth, making it suitable for those who prefer less dense celebration cakes. The matcha flavour comes through clearly without becoming overpowering, which gives the cake a calm and refined profile rather than a rich dessert-style finish.

Personally, I enjoyed the flavour combination, although I did find the bits of tea stems/leaves inside the cake slightly distracting from the otherwise silky texture. For some, however, that extra texture may actually enhance the experience.

This is a thoughtful option if you are choosing a Mother’s Day cake for someone who enjoys café-style tea desserts rather than classic buttercream cakes.

Cabernet Nutty Berry Cake Review: A More Adventurous Mother’s Day Choice

The Cabernet Nutty Berry Cake stands out as the boldest flavour profile in this year’s collection.

At its centre is a Cabernet Sauvignon red wine jelly layer that gives the cake a distinctive character, supported by raspberry fresh cream and soft vanilla sponge. The result is a dessert that feels more sophisticated than a typical celebration cake.

I personally liked the wine flavour in the cake, which added depth and contrast. However, I didn’t enjoy the nuts as much when paired with the other flavours within this cake. My husband felt this cake was less memorable overall compared to the others we tried, while my daughter preferred only the sponge layers and avoided the wine jelly entirely — which is understandable since that’s where the strongest flavour sits.

This cake is best suited for adult celebrations where guests are likely to appreciate wine-inspired desserts.

Bobo Cha Cha Cake Review: The Clear Crowd Favourite

Among the three new cakes, the Bobo Cha Cha Cake was easily the standout choice across everyone at home, including my mum.

Inspired by the well-loved local dessert, the cake combines yam chiffon sponge with sweet potato paste layers and coconut fresh cream. While it doesn’t replicate the traditional dessert exactly, it captures the comforting flavour profile in a way that feels familiar yet modern.

The yam flavour comes through clearly, supported by the slightly dense sweetness of the sweet potato paste. The coconut cream sits gently in the background without overpowering the cake, creating a balanced finish that works well across different age groups.

If you’re choosing just one cake from this Mother’s Day collection, this is the safest and most crowd-pleasing option. Unless one doesn’t like yam.

Traditional Teochew Treats That Complement a Mother’s Day Table

Alongside the celebration cakes, The Pine Garden also offers several heritage-style items including steamed yam cake, turnip cake, glutinous rice and the seasonal Orh-Ni in pumpkin.

These dishes are especially meaningful additions if you are planning a multi-generation Mother’s Day gathering where some family members may prefer warm, traditional flavours over modern celebration cakes. They definitely taste as good as my mum’s and reminds me of those that I’ve eaten in my childhood too!

The Orh-Ni in pumpkin, available for a limited period, stands out as a comforting nostalgic dessert option that pairs naturally with tea after a family meal.

Which Pine Garden Mother’s Day Cake Should You Choose?

If your family enjoys nostalgic local dessert flavours, the Bobo Cha Cha Cake is the most reliable crowd-pleaser.

If the celebration is centred around tea lovers or lighter desserts, the Matcha Fog Cake is a refined and elegant option.

If you’re planning a smaller adult celebration and want something slightly more adventurous, the Cabernet Nutty Berry Cake offers a distinctive wine-infused twist.

Pairing one celebration cake with a traditional dessert like Orh-Ni can create a more balanced Mother’s Day spread, especially for gatherings that include grandparents.
