If you’re looking for a cosy spot in the city to kickstart your day with good food before soaking in world-class art, the newly opened Bakery Brera café at National Gallery Singapore is a worthy stop. This homegrown artisanal bakery has long been a hidden gem at Empress Market, and now it’s bringing its French-inspired pastries and signature creations to a beautiful, airy space in the Gallery’s City Hall Wing.
A Family-Friendly Morning Out
The café opens from 9am, making it one of the earliest dining spots inside the Gallery. Parents will appreciate this timing — you can settle the kids with breakfast before wandering through the exhibitions. The space itself is cleverly designed: there are cosy window-side nooks for friends catching up, as well as larger sofas perfect for families.
Highlights from the Menu
I managed to try a wide spread during the media tasting, and a few dishes definitely stood out:
French Toast – Rich, fluffy, and made with their freshly baked brioche, this was a crowd favourite.
Open-Faced Sandwiches – The burrata and sous-vide chicken on smashed avocado was a hit, while the sourdough base gave each bite a rustic, satisfying chew.
Croque Monsieur – My personal favourite. Cheesy, savoury, and perfectly indulgent.
Croissant – True to their mission of staying close to French patisserie standards, their croissant is buttery and crisp, though not quite Paris-level. Still, definitely worth ordering.
Key Lime Tart, Rhubarb Tart & Chocolate Tart – The key lime was refreshingly tart, while the chocolate ganache balanced bitterness with a hint of salt. A surprise came with the Rhubarb Tart, which tasted more like strawberry. Thrina, the founder, later revealed that the kitchen actually cooks the rhubarb with strawberry jam to sweeten it — a little insider tidbit you wouldn’t know otherwise.
For drinks, I had the Hojicha Latte, which I felt could’ve used a stronger roasted punch, while a fellow media guest tried the hot chocolate — freshly ground on-site, but also noted as needing a little more oomph. The Chamomile Cold Brew, however, was delightful and refreshing.
Behind the Scenes with Thrina
One of the special moments was when founder Thrina Low took us into the kitchen, where we saw the team making the Mille-Feuille. This particular pastry is her personal request and can only be found at the National Gallery café, not at their Empress Market location. Thrina also shared that they’ve brought their catering-only tarts to this café, giving customers more variety under one roof.
Something for Everyone
What I really appreciate about Bakery Brera at the Gallery is the diversity of the menu. There are indulgent pastries for those with a sweet tooth, but also healthy bowls, Bircher muesli with fresh fruit, and fresh sourdough sandwiches for those looking for a lighter option. It’s a café that caters equally to kids, adults, and the health-conscious.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Bakery Brera’s National Gallery outlet strikes a lovely balance between artisanal bakes and family-friendly dining. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a comforting breakfast, sneak in a sweet treat, and then head upstairs to explore the artworks — all without leaving the building. For parents, couples, or groups of friends, it’s an easy and enjoyable day out.
