Decided to cook brunch today as we had some more smoked salmon left (9 slices, to be exact) and I wanted to eat something non-Asian. It’s a full-on brunch which has a poached egg on a slice of wholewheat toast and topped with smoked salmon and homemade Hollandaise sauce. To make it a little healthier and less guilty pleasure, I sautéed baby portobello mushrooms as well as kale and to make it more like an English breakfast, I added a banger. Let’s start with the simple Hollandaise Sauce, which you can make easily and use it on other food items...
Open Face Sandwich with Spinach, Avocado, Smoked Salmon & Special Shrimp
Made a very simple lunch for myself today as I wasn’t hungry from all the feasting done last night. So, I pulled a few items from the fridge and made this simple open face sandwich but you can always opt to make it a clean salad. Ingredients:1 slice of bread, toasted (I used wholewheat)1/2 avocado, sliced or cut into chunks3 slices of smoked salmon1 cup of spinach1 clove of garlic, minced1 dessert spoon of balsamic vinegar (as a dressing)salt and pepper to taste Method: Toast your bread and while it’s toasting, fry your garlic until it’s golden brown. Sautee your...
The Black Swan Entices With Art Deco & Classic Good Food
Located at a corner where Cecil Street meets Marina Boulevard, The Black Swan resides in an 1930s building which used to be a bank. Running with the Art Deco theme, the Lo & Behold Group transformed it into The Black Swan, which serves classic cuisine that borders on being French-Americano. Upon entering the restaurant, you are greeted by the unique bar and the high ceiling. The writing on the bar reads, “Here’s to the Rose Coloured Glasses Of Life”. La vie en rose. Well…less American since they still spelt Coloured the British way *wink*. Panoramic view of The Black Swan...
Artisanal Pizza Has Finally Arrived In City Hall Area – Alt. Pizza
My dad read an article in Sunday Times recently about Alt. Pizza and he got all excited about it because the owner of Alt. Pizza (Matthew White) had helped to launch Extra Virgin Pizza and I had brought my dad to Extra Virgin Pizza once and he was so impressed by the pizza there that he remembered the name. Long story short, we finally went to Alt. Pizza for dinner. Located at a tiny corner of Suntec City, Tower 4, it is no wonder that this place is not as popular as Peperoni downstairs. It is on Level 1 and...
Wannabe Kale Frittata with Beef and Cherry Tomatoes
This is a wannabe frittata because I didn’t add cheese nor did I bake this dish and it could be called an omelette except that there’s more kale than egg. I found this dish incredibly tasty and stir frying the kale will eliminate any bitterness that is inherent in the veg. This recipe serves 1. Ingredients:1 clove of garlic, minced 3 kale leaves, chopped5 cherry tomatoes, halved100g sliced beef (meant for stir frying or shabu shabu)2 eggs1 tbsp milk salt & pepper to taste Method: Heat up the oil and fry the garlic until golden brown Add in the beef...
Stir Fried Shirataki with Kale, Beef and Cherry Tomatoes in a Peanut Sauce
I reckon you guys will be seeing a few more recipes with Kale from me because I recently purchased a whole bunch of it and after reading all the benefits of it, I think I might eat more Kale. Apparently, 1 serving of Kale contains only 30 calories and has enough vitamin C to last you the whole day as well as vitamin K! Shirataki is yet another wonderful low calorie ingredient. 200g of these noodles is only 1 calorie or so. So, this dish that I whipped up for dinner contains about 250 calories and it’s mainly from the...
Chui Huay Lim Cuisine – Delicious Singaporean Take on Traditional Teochew Cuisine
Chui Huay Lim Club is nestled in a corner along Keng Lee Road, near Newton, and the Club itself is more than 160 years old. The flagship restaurant is also called Chui Huay Lim and it literally translates as Forest of Drunken Flowers. Hmm…how poetic. The family and I decided to go there for dinner and taste test the food as we were thinking of having our family reunion dinner with my paternal side there next month. My bro and I were a bit surprised that the Chui Huay Lim restaurant is managed by the Jumbo group. Photo courtesy of...
Good Place For Date Night – Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House (The Heeren)
Located in a nondescript corner of the 3rd floor of Robinsons, The Heeren (btw, the new Robinsons at Heeren remind me of Selfridges in London…but that’s a separate topic), that’s only highlighted with this thin sign, the family and I went to Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House for a special post-Christmas dinner. This particular branch at Heeren is very small and it has a bar seating as well as about 6 four-seaters and 4 two-seaters. This means that in order to be assured of a table, please reserve in advance. The decor of this branch is a classy black...
Spaghetti with Salmon Belly, Tomatoes & Avocado
It’s a Saturday, it’s lunch time and I’m feeling too lazy to go downstairs to buy food back while also feeling guilty for skipping Pilates this morning. So what do I whip up for lunch? A healthy meal of Spaghetti with slices of salmon belly, diced tomatoes and an avocado. Yes, it’s an oily dish but it’s all essential fatty acids! It may seem a bit weird Ingredients:1 avocado, diced5 cherry tomatoes, halved OR 1/2 large tomato, diced5 slices of salmon belly OR smoked salmon/ salmon fillet1 clove garlic, mincedenough spaghetti for 1 personsalt & pepper to tasteoptional – slice...
Replacing Eggs In Baking
If you’re a lazy cook/baker like me, there will be times when you realise that you have missing ingredients just when you’ve taken out the flour, chocolate chips and what nots. Most likely, you’ll find out that you have run out of eggs. We tend to take it for granted that our egg tray is stocked…but don’t fret! You can replace them eggs with other things! Good tip for vegans too! I did replace eggs with banana when I made my Salted Caramel Banana Chia Seed Cupcakes simply because I ran out of eggs. Haha…now you know why. Photo credit:...
