Despite Singapore having gone back to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) with all the restrictions of dining-in and F&B owners struggling, Aroma Coffee is staying ahead of the game with their takeout store concept.

Aroma Coffee is the sister brand of Aroma Truffle, and they’re serving up adventurous specialty concoctions named Spreeze – the first delectable fusion between specialty coffee and artisanal tea. Now, don’t think that it’s your typical cup of Yuan Yang (mix of coffee and tea).

As explained by Andrew Tjoa, Co-founder of Aroma Coffee who is a certified barista and NUS chemistry graduate, “Oftentimes, local coffee joints tend to add flavoured syrup into the coffee. This is the quickest way to add flavours into coffee. However, this comes as a dilemma among specialty coffee lovers who prefer their coffee unsweetened and untampered with artificial ingredients.”

The idea of setting up Aroma Coffee & Co. was conceived during the circuit breaker period when Kayson Chan, Co-founder of Aroma Truffle, and Andrew realised that Singaporeans’ coffee preference is becoming more sophisticated. However, during product development, they were stuck for a few months while experimenting with countless ingredients until an innocent question was posed to the founders: “Why can’t the taste of coffee be as straightforward as tea?”

Thus, Aroma Coffee has taken a bold step by infusing aromatic artisanal tea (e.g. Earl Grey, floral scented and fruit scented tea leaves) into their coffees. The infusion technique involves cold brewing fresh milk with artisanal tea for more than 12 hours, with flavours curated after sampling more than 82 types of artisanal tea leaves and hundreds of beans from different origins around the world.

This combination of coffee and tea is called Spreeze in Ethiopia, which is a western type of Yuan Yang. This introduces depth, complexity and most importantly, aroma into the coffee while maintaining the inherent goodness of the coffee in a more natural way.

The result is a medium-to-full bodied, low acidity cup, roasted just enough to bring out the fruity notes of tea while preserving the aroma of coffee.
